«Sun’s Daughter» - a piece for fujara and a set of classical musical instruments
Fujara is a bass flute, coming from Slovakia, traditionally a solo instrument played by men who play and sing. This piece for flute, fujara, viola, cello and double-bass moves freely between centuries-old folk traditions and chamber and contemporary music. This unique combination of instruments aims to explore new sonorities and build bridges between tradition and modernity. Immersive, raw, and deeply emotive, the piece beckons listeners into a realm of musical storytelling that is both expansive and profoundly resonant.
Written for Tøyen Fil og Klafferi with Michaela Antalová and Adrian Myhr.
Commissioned by NKF and Music Norway.
Premiered on September 6, 2024 at Punkt festival in Kristiansand, Norway.
”Designed with a presence that makes me listen. The dynamics are strong, but never loud, and the balance between the instruments is playful and strict. It is good to hear music without another agenda than to bloom, without flashy colors. Towards the end of the concert, they make a short visit to the merry-go-round and take ownership of their own little adventure. The sounds from the fujara remain, but it is the impressions from the whole ensemble that carry.”
- Arild R. Andersen, Jazz i Norge
"The composition took up Slovakian folk music and transported it into contemporary music. Beautiful music that built a bridge from traditional music to new music. A very special highlight of the festival."
